August is Hazard Communication Month - Know the Signs

To fulfill our obligation in protecting the health and safety of our employees, Diamond Roofing has developed a hazard communication standard (HCS) program that complies with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards 29 CFR 1910.1200 and 29 CFR 1926.59 and we dedicate the month of August to educating and training our employees about workplace exposures.

To comply with the newest standard, our qualified trainer utilizes the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) Hazard Communication Program: Know the Signs as a training tool which includes an employee HCS manual, HCS instructional video in English and Spanish, provides a HCS examination and certifies employees for successful completion.

Additionally, Diamond Roofing maintains a hazardous chemical list, obtains safety data sheets (SDSs) for each hazardous material used, and provides further toolbox training to our employees -- so they have a thorough understanding of what the standard requires.

NRCA Toolbox Talk HCS topics and common roofing industry exposures discussed throughout the month include:

HCS Topics:

  • Hazard Communication

  • Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) - 16-section Format

  • Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) - Right to Know

Exposures:

  • Carbon Monoxide

  • Heat Stress

  • Lead

  • MDI/Isocyanates

And finally during this time of uncertainty, we provide workplace safety information and resources about awareness and how to manage COVID-19. This includes best practices for prevention; as well as, links to authoritative information from the CDC, WHO, and OSHA.
